OPS Name
CAPABILITY THROUGH DISABILITY
Why this OPS?
Many societies in South Africa and most parts of the world do not take into consideration the existence of people who are physically challenged of which they call them disabled. The society does not consider their importance as individual who are members of the society also and therefore that makes them feel dishonoured and victims of discrimination. So by deciding to work wit the disabled persons I want to break the distance between the society’s sanctions or perceptions about people who are physically challenged.
Objectives
The goals of that I want to achieve with this project is to help the disabled persons in our community to be able to feel more welcomed to live with normal people and making sure that they know that they are special and they can be happy at any time if they wish to without being stopped or prevented by any individual. The secondary objective of this project is to teach them meditation and how to create inner peace time. The reason I teach them how to meditate is because , through inner peace time they can be capable to respond positively even thou they were discouraged or if they experience some difficulties they may choose meditation as one of the good beneficial healing method.
How to implement it?
I have previously worked with this centre in the previous years, last time i was with them I spent two full weeks teaching and offering general assistance to the co-ordinator of the centre. The additional day I used it was when i was implementing my special OPS project. Firstly I introduced my self and the organization to which I belong to. I told them about the Peace Revolution program and its objectives and how they can be part of the programme in bringing the PEACE in the whole world. The first activity I performed with them was the general motivation, whereby I gave them advices and motivation about how important they are and how special they are to many people such as me. The second activity was called INNER PEACE HOUR where I divided them into 5 groups, then I attended each group and we did meditation altogether and thought them how important is to always being happy and smile always. What I like about them is that they are always smiling and that symbolises their curiosity in maintaining happiness and peace within themselves. The third activity I did with them was to help their teacher in teaching for the day, I volunteered to teach Numerical Literacy and Visual literacy paying more attention to aspects of peace an d made a lot of examples on how can one maintain peace and live with it. We also took pictures and had a long chat thereafter, It was a nice thing to work with Bambanani Disabled Centre.
Benefits
I have learnt a lot of things about people who are physically challenged, and to an extent that they even proved to me that they are capable of doing things and they very much confidence about themselves. I have thus increased my facilitation skills, and I feel more blessed and honoured to have given back to the community, this is just not only for the Peace Revolution program but also PASSION has driven me to engage myself with the learners and be able to interact with them and hear their views about aspects of life. I, myself I have a lot when coming to be creative and gaining a lot of confidence from within hidden forces. The peace agenda was well marketed to different kinds of people and therefore that makes me happy. I want to thank my friend Silvester who was my photographer for the day; he captured all the activities by camera. Thumbs up to that!
